About Mr Murray MacCormick
Murray has been in surgical practice in Auckland for over 30 years and is now one of Auckland's senior General and Vascular Surgeons.
A graduate of Kings Preparatory, Auckland Grammar, and Otago University Medical Schools, and from a well known medical family he completed post graduate surgical training in Auckland, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1977.
Murray then completed a 3 year stint as Lecturer in the Surgical Professorial Unit at London's St Bartholomews Hospital Medical School before returning to Auckland Hospital as Surgical Specialist in 1980.
After 2 years as full time surgeon at the Auckland Hospital he entered private practice combining part time work as General, Vascular, and Renal Transplant Surgeon at Auckland Hospital with his private work based at the Mercy and the Southern Cross Hospitals.
From 1989 to 1998 he was Clinical Director of General Surgery at Auckland and during this time was responsible for the introduction of several innovations in surgery, performing the first successful laparoscopic gallbladder removal at Auckland, the first laparoscopic adrenal tumour removal, and parathyroid auto transplantation - all now routine procedures. During this period he was also responsible for introducing the various sub specialties in General Surgery as well as establishment of Vascular Surgery as a stand alone unit separate from cardio-thoracic surgery.
Since then Murray has confined his public hospital practice to Vascular Surgery although he still does accept some general surgical referrals in private practice. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University School of Medicine Department of Surgery.
Apart from a busy surgical life Murray has been a member of the Board of the Auckland Cancer Society for over twenty years, and President for the last three, a position he currently still holds. He also sits as a member of the Board of the Cancer Society of New Zealand.
As a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons he has been a Director of the trauma courses (ATLS, EMST) administered by the College as well as a tutor in courses on Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient.
In his private life Murray is married with six children. His interests include gardening, home workshop, and golf, with membership of The Northern Club, The Royal Auckland Golf Club, and The Dunes Golf Club, Matarangi.
