About Mr Venu Bhamidi

Minimally-invasive solutions for arterial disease & varicose veins

Venu's surgical training was in Perth, Melbourne, Auckland & Toronto, Canada. Venu has been a Specialist Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in Auckland since May 2014. His main consulting rooms are located in Ascot Hospital in Remuera, with satellite consulting locations in Silverdale and Albany. He has operating rights at Ascot Hospital, Mercy Hospital and Mercy Angiography.

Venu's scope of practice involves all aspects of arterial and venous diseases and is one of the few Auckland Vascular Surgeons who have undergone extensive endovascular surgical training. His preference for a minimally invasive method of treatment is aligned with the developing technological advances where endovascular therapies have become the first line treatment in most cases of arterial and venous disease.

Since starting as a Vascular Surgeon in Auckland City Hospital, Venu has established the first Multi-Disciplinary Diabetic Foot Clinic for the Auckland DHB. This clinic serves to identify and intensively treat diabetic patients who develop minor foot wounds to prevent disease/wound progression and subsequent minor or major leg amputation. As the clinical lead of the Auckland Regional Diabetic Foot Service, he works with a closely-knit multi-disciplinary specialist team consisting of vascular & wound care nurse specialists, Podiatrists, Diabetiologists and Orthotic/footwear specialists. The team also has a close working relationship with Orthopedic surgeons, Plastic surgeons and Infectious Disease specialists who are involved with highly complex patients. Along with his podiatry colleagues, Venu is further developing a multi-disciplinary team in Waitamata & Northland DHBs, where he sees patients in clinic on a monthly basis. He is extremely passionate about all aspects of Diabetic foot care including minimising/preventing lower limb amputation. Following the success of the diabetic foot clinic, Venu became the clinical lead for the MercyAscot Comprehensive Vascular Wound Clinic, offering multi-disciplinary care for all lower limb vascular wounds.

Venu is currently developing surgical techniques for soft tissue/flap transfers for foot salvage. He has published in numerous journals internationally and has a strong academic interest. He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer (Hon) at the University of Auckland in 2014, is the Convener and Chair for Australian & New Zealand society of Vascular Surgery meeting 2018, the assistant editor (Vascular Surgery) for the ANZ Journal of Surgeryand a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
