About Mr Bernd Grunewald
Mr Grunewald offers comprehensive general abdominal and laparoscopic surgical services as well as interventional endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP). His special interests are investigations and management of upper gastro-intestinal disorders including gastro-oesophageal reflux, and the multidisciplinary treatment of gastro-intestinal tumours.
He completed his medical degree with an MD from Heidelberg University in Germany in 1987. He underwent basic surgical training in Great Britain where he obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1990. After immigrating to New Zealand, he undertook further advanced training in General Surgery in Hamilton and Auckland and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1999.
He subsequently completed a 12 months Fellowship at the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Unit of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney where he obtained further training in the management of benign and malignant disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract as well as in advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.
He returned to New Zealand in 2001 and was appointed Consultant General Surgeon at Waikato Hospital. He has been in private practice since 2003 while continuing his commitment to the public sector.
