Mr Mark Grant
Consultant Bariatric & Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon
about Mr Mark Grant
Mr Mark Grant is a Dunedin-based Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon providing specialist surgical care across Dunedin, Queenstown, Wanaka, Invercargill, Otago and Southland.
He specialises in weight loss (bariatric) surgery, anti-reflux surgery, hernia repair, and gallbladder surgery, offering both advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques tailored to each patient.
Mark has a particular interest in the management of obesity as a chronic disease, as well as conditions affecting the oesophagus and stomach, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), hiatal hernia, and cancers of the stomach and oesophagus.
Originally from London, Mark graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine before moving to New Zealand, where he completed his General Surgical training and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2013. He first came to Dunedin as a medical student and developed a strong connection to the region.
He subsequently completed advanced subspecialty training in the United Kingdom, including an Oesophagogastric Fellowship at University Hospital Southampton. He later worked as a Consultant Oesophagogastric Surgeon at both University Hospital Southampton and Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, managing complex benign and malignant upper gastrointestinal conditions.
In 2017, Mark returned to New Zealand to complete dedicated Bariatric Surgery training at Waitematā DHB, gaining extensive experience in gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and revisional bariatric procedures.
He is currently an Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon at Te Whatu Ora Southern, delivering specialist care locally so patients across Otago and Southland can access high-quality surgical treatment without needing to travel out of region.
Mark works closely with a multidisciplinary team, including dietitians and psychologists, to provide a comprehensive, long-term approach to weight loss and metabolic health.
He has always aimed to provide a high standard of care with an informative patient focus. So, our web site has been designed as an educational resource for patients and their families. It will be regularly updated, so please feel free to check it out: www.southernweightloss.co.nz.
