Basivertebral Nerve Ablation for Spinal Discovertebral Pain in Auckland, New Zealand

What is Spinal Discovertebral Pain?
Low Back pain is commonly caused by the discs or the vertebrae in your spine. In particular, discovertebral pain comes from the vertebral endplates - the junction between the vertebrae and intervertebral discs. This pain is typically deep and aching, and may worsen with movement or prolonged sitting, often limiting daily activities and reducing quality of life.

What is Basivertebral Nerve Ablation?
Basivertebral nerve ablation, is an advanced, minimally invasive treatment designed to target chronic low back pain caused by the basivertebral nerve. This nerve transmits pain signals from the vertebral endplates, and by ablating (destroying) it, the procedure aims to reduce or eliminate these pain signals.

How Does Basivertebral Nerve Ablation Work?
1. Preparation: The patient lies face down, and local anesthesia is administered to numb the targeted area of the spine.
2. Needle Insertion: Using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, a small probe is inserted through a needle into the vertebrae near the basivertebral nerve.
3. Ablation Process: Radiofrequency energy is applied through the probe, heating and ablating the basivertebral nerve, stopping it from transmitting pain signals.
4. Completion: The entire procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes. Patients can return home the same day and generally can resume normal duties within a week.

Efficacy of Basivertebral Nerve Ablation
Basivertebral nerve ablation has shown promising results for treating chronic low back pain, particularly in patients who have not responded well to conservative treatments like physical therapy or medication. Clinical studies demonstrate significant pain reduction and improved functionality, with many patients experiencing long-term relief lasting several years. Recovery is generally quick, with many resuming normal activities within a week.

For individuals suffering from chronic discovertebral pain, basivertebral nerve ablation offers a safe, effective, and long-lasting solution to regain comfort and mobility.

We are one of the only clinics in New Zealand offering this minimally invasive and effective treatment for back pain.
