Dr Reuben J Broom

Medical oncologist
Dr Broom specialises in breast and renal cancers. He graduated from Auckland University in 1999, and between 2006 and 2008 he completed a clinical research fellowship at Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, Canada. He is an active researcher in both breast and renal cancers and is conducting translational research in these malignancies in collaboration with several Auckland laboratories.

Dr Peter Fong

Dr Fong specialises in gynaecological cancer, prostate cancer & research into oncology Phase I trials. His specialist experience includes a fellowship at Royal Marsden Hospital, London where he undertook Phase I Oncology Drug Development. He works in the Gynaecological Cancer team at Auckland Hospital and also Canopy Cancer Care. Peter registered as a Specialist 2003.

Dr Fritha Hanning

Medical oncologist
Dr Hanning specialises in prostate, renal, testicular and bladder cancers. She is a graduate of Auckland University. Fritha worked and studied overseas, predominately in the UK before returning to Auckland City Hospital in 2006. Fritha is the foundation Chairperson of the Genitourinary Cancer Special Interest Group of New Zealand. She currently works at Auckland City Hospital and Canopy Cancer Care.

Dr Ben Lawrence

Dr Lawrence specialises in gastro-intestinal (GI) cancers, pancreatic, neuroendicrine, genomics and cancer molecular profiling. He is an Auckland-trained Medical Oncologist, having recently completed a two year research Fellowship at Yale University. Prior to this he was a Drug Development Scholar at TGen in Scottsdale Arizona. Ben returned to Auckland in 2012 to take up concurrent faculty positions at the University of Auckland and Auckland City Hospital. He also works at Canopy Cancer Care. Year of Registration as Specialist 2011.

Dr Mike McCrystal

Dr McCrystal has an interest in the cancer genetics, melanoma, breast cancers and gastro-intestinal (GI) cancers. He graduated from Auckland University in 1987 before specialising as a Medical Oncologist. Mike completed his MD in cancer drug development and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Oncology at Auckland University. Year of Registration as Specialist 2000.

Dr Richard Sullivan

Dr Sullivan specialises in treating patients with lung cancer, head, neck and brain tumors and also mesothelioma. Richard graduated from Otago University in 1994. Richard is the Managing Director of Canopy Cancer Care, the Director of Cancer and Blood Auckland City Hospital and also the Director of the Northern Cancer Network. He is the Co-Chairman of the New Zealand Adolescent Working Group. Year of Registration as Specialist 2004.

Dr Richard Doocey
MBChB FRACP FRCPA.
Clinical haematologist
Dr Doocey is a clinical haematologist with a special interest in malignant haematology including lymphoma, myeloma, leukaemia, myeloproliferative disorders and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. He is a graduate of the University of Otago and the Christchurch School of Medicine. He is currently the Clinical Director of the Auckland City Hospital Haematology Service and the Auckland and Starship Childrens Hospitals Stem Cell Transplant Program. Dr Laird Cameron

Dr Laird Cameron is a Medical Oncologist specialising in lung, mesothelioma and head & neck malignancies.
Having initially completed a BSc majoring in biochemistry, Laird graduated from Otago Medical School in 2003. He undertook his core general medical and oncology training in Wellington. Laird is dual trained and gained membership as both a general physician and medical oncologist with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2015.
From 2014 to 2016 he completed a clinical fellowship in lung and head & neck malignancies at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia with a strong emphasis on translating new treatments to better outcomes for cancer patients including targeted therapies and immunotherapy. He has peer-reviewed publications in treating ALK-rearranged lung cancers.
Laird takes pride in tailoring treatments to the needs and goals of the patient, he communicates clearly and has an open and caring approach.
Laird has been treating lung cancer at Auckland Hospital since his return to New Zealand in 2016. He is the New Zealand representative on the Australasian Lung Trials Group and is committed to improving the health of New Zealanders with cancer through active involvement in research.

Dr Abbey Wrigley

Dr Abbey Wrigley is a Medical Oncologist who treats a variety of cancer types, and has a particular focus on the treatment of breast, lung, and gastro-intestinal malignancies. Abbey is a practising Medical Oncologist at Whangarei Hospital in addition to her work at Canopy Cancer Care. She graduation from Otago University medical school in 2006 and became a fellow of The Royal College of Physicians in 2014 after completing her advanced training in medical oncology.
In 2014 she received the inaugural NZ Breast Cancer Foundation Clinical Oncology Fellowship, supporting her research at The University of Auckland. She graduated with a Masters of Medical Science with first degree honours in 2017.
Her research thesis examined the genetic changes found in early breast cancer. Abbey is a compassionate, driven, and approachable oncologist. As well as seeing Auckland based patients, she is interested in providing excellent quality care to patients from other regions and improving cancer outcomes for the Northland community while working in her public role.

Dr Elliott Brenman

Dr Elliott Brenman is a general Medical Oncologist with a special interest in genitourinary, gynaecological and lung cancers.
Elliott graduated from Nottingham Medical School (UK) in 2006 and spent 4 years working in hospitals in the UK. During that time he gained full membership to the Royal College of Physicians (UK). In 2010 he moved to New Zealand and decided to settle permanently. Elliott conducted his oncology specialist training at Waikato and Auckland Hospitals. Elliott has a passion for teaching and education. He was the first ever trainee to sit on the Royal Collage advisory board for Oncology Training in New Zealand. He regularly teaches students at all levels from medical school through to doctors advanced training in Oncology.
Elliott completed his specialist training in 2015. He spent a year working as a consultant in both public and private hospitals in Auckland. At this time he also conducted a clinical research fellowship through the University of Auckland. In 2016 Elliott moved to the Bay of Plenty to take up a permanent Medical Oncology position in Tauranga Hospital.

Dr Michelle Head
BHB, MBChB, FRACP.
Medical oncologist
Dr Michelle Head is trained as a general oncologist, with a special interest in a number of tumour types, including breast, head & neck, lung and gastrointestinal cancers. She also has an active interest and welcomes referrals for patients with melanoma and lymphoma.
Dr Head was raised in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region and attended Katikati College. She graduated from Auckland University in 2002 and completed Medical Oncology training in 2011, having worked in a number of New Zealand centres.
Dr Head has been an investigator on more than 20 clinical trials, and has published in peer reviewed journals. She also works at the Bay of Plenty District Health Board, where she has assisted in protocol development in the Medical Oncology Unit. She is a Clinical Teaching Supervisor for senior nursing staff and involved in teaching of junior doctors and medical students.
Dr Head has a strong interest in the psychosocial and survivorship aspects of oncology, and was a founding member of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Psycho-Oncology Forum.

Dr Joanna Jones

Dr Joanna Jones is a Medical Oncologist with a special interest in Breast and Gynaecological cancers.
Joanna graduated from the University of Auckland Medical School in 2005. In 2009 she completed a Clinical Diploma of Palliative Medicine and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2013.
After graduation Joanna worked in Auckland before moving to Australia to complete her specialist training in medical oncology. She trained at many of the large tertiary and regional centres in South East Queensland including Royal Brisbane Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital and Mater Adult Hospital. In 2012 she was awarded a fellowship to attend the ACORD protocol development workshop. Her research focussed on symptom management for advanced gynaecological cancers.
In 2014, Joanna returned to New Zealand with her husband and young family to take up a position as Medical Oncologist at Tauranga Hospital.

Dr Richard North
BHB, MBChB, FRACP.

Richard North trained as a general medical oncologist but maintains specific interests in gastro-intestinal and lung cancers along with melanoma.
He trained in Auckland and Waikato before moving to Newcastle in Australia to complete his fellowship training. Newcastle boasts a large cancer centre and includes the ANZ Breast Cancer Trials Unit and the Newcastle Melanoma Unit.
Richard came to Tauranga in 2008 and was the first medical oncologist based in Tauranga & Whakatane. He has been instrumental in building and expanding the service over the years. He has a passion for the people in the Bay of Plenty and his goal is to provide the optimal oncology experience for patients from the region.
Richard is, and has been the principal investigator in a large number of phase III multinational trials in oncology since moving to Tauranga in 2008.

Vince is a Medical Oncologist with a special interest in gynaecological and genitourinary cancers including renal and prostate cancer and also has experience in treating gastrointestinal and lung cancer.
Vince graduated from the University of Auckland with a BSc then undertook his medical degree at the University of Otago graduating in 2001. He worked in Auckland hospital in a range of areas including cardiology and geriatrics then completed his specialist training in Medical Oncology, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2014.
He is currently the Clinical Director of Cancer and Blood Services at Northland District Health Board where he has worked as a Medical Oncologist for several years. He is actively involved in quality initiatives in cancer services and is dedicated to improving health services for Northland patients.
He provides a holistic, patient-centered approach, treating every patient with dignity and respect and aims to restore hope and health combining up-to-date evidence-based practice with individualised one-on-one care.
When not working Vince enjoys the lifestyle opportunities Northland offers including tramping and fishing with his family.

Dr Lisa Dawson

Lisa is a general Medical Oncologist working in Northland with a special interest in Breast cancer and Melanoma.
Lisa graduated from St. Georges Medical School London in 1994 with a BSc(Hon) and MB BS.
She moved to NZ in 1995 with her NZ born husband. She initially trained and worked as a GP with a special interest in holistic medicine from 2000-2005. She then went on to train in internal medicine gaining entrance to the Royal Australasian College of Medicine in 2010.
After advanced training in medical Oncology she took up a position as Medical Oncologist and Clinical Director of the Cancer and Blood services in Whangarei. In 2015 the department won an excellence award for the development of their model of care.
Lisa continues to work treating all cancers at Whangarei hospital, particularly breast cancer and melanoma. She also has a special interest in Integrative Oncology. This takes a whole person view of treating cancer, incorporating evidence based complementary practices such as nutrition, exercise and stress management. Lisa is a member of the Society of Integrative Oncology. She believes in carefully assessing all the issues that a patient and family face before implementing a personalised management plan.
Lisa is married with 6 children. Her family enjoy spending time sailing and are actively involved in their local church Arise.
