about Prof Richard Douglas
He trained in medicine and surgery at the University of Auckland, graduating in 1986. After qualification and completing his house officer years, he spent three years undertaking doctoral research toward an MD degree. He spent two years in the UK where he passed the MRCP exams and then completed his FRACP training in Auckland before leaving for Melbourne for a fellowship in Clinical Immunology and Allergy at The Alfred Hospital. He returned to be the Clinical Director of the Clinical Immunology and Allergy Service at Auckland Hospital. He held this post for three years before deciding to pursue training in ORL surgery. This was undertaken in Auckland and Hamilton, and in 2005 he completed a specialist rhinology and skull base fellowship in Adelaide.
Richard has always had a commitment to research and teaching with more than 50 career academic publications so far with particular research interests including the role of bacteria in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis and improving healing after sinus surgery. He has active collaborations with scientists in the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Medicine at the University of Auckland and the University of Washington in Seattle.
He continues an active involvement in under- and post-graduate university and clinical teaching and also is a frequent attendee and speaker at local and international meetings.
He is a member of the Australia and New Zealand Rhinologic Society (currently Vice President), American Rhinologic Society and Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy.

Trained and practised as a clinical immunologist and allergist before undertaking training in ORL.
