Pain Management

Pain medicine is a multi-disciplinary speciality which provides medical care to assist with the management of persistent pain (pain lasting longer than 3 months). A specialist pain medicine doctor is a medical specialist who has undergone training and qualification in assessment and management of patients for whom pain is the primary presenting problem. A specialist pain medicine doctors’ spectrum of care includes interventional pain-relieving procedures, medication management and titration, and coordination of multidisciplinary team input. A specialist pain medicine doctor uses a combination of sociological (behavioural), psychological and biomedical strategies to help reduce pain, restore function and improve quality of life. Many pain medicine doctors work closely with pain-specialised clinical psychologists, physiotherapists and psychiatrists. This multidisciplinary team assists with the education of patients and implementation of active strategies, for the management of mental, physical and emotional factors which contribute to persistent pain.
