about New Zealand Prosthetic Eye Service

The New Zealand Prosthetic Eye Service is a specialist multidisciplinary practice dedicated to the rehabilitation of people with eye loss or disfigurement.
Established in 2008, the service provides custom prosthetic eyes, scleral shells, and orbital prostheses in clinics across New Zealand. Care is evidence-based and delivered in collaboration with ophthalmologists and optometrists to optimise long-term socket health, prosthesis comfort, and cosmetic outcomes.
The highly trained team is actively involved in research & innovation to advance prosthetic eye care & improve outcomes for patients.

  • Ocular prosthetic assessment & rehabilitation: Comprehensive assessment for children & adults with eye loss, blind disfigured eyes, or orbital defects
  • Custom prostheses: Fabrication & fitting of custom prosthetic eyes, scleral shells & orbital prostheses
  • Prosthesis maintenance: Professional cleaning & polishing of prostheses
  • Clinical review & long-term care: Ongoing monitoring of socket health & prosthesis fit. Management of discharge & prosthesis-related complications
  • Oculoplastic assessment & surgical management: Eyelid & socket conditions that influence prosthetic eye fit, comfort, & cosmetic outcome
  • Multidisciplinary coordination: Collaborative care with ophthalmologists, optometrists, oculoplastic surgeons, oncology teams, & primary caare providers

Funding
Most patients receive full funding for prostheses via the Ministry of Health, ACC, or local DHBs.
