Cardiac CT
A Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT) Scan is an imaging test that creates 3D and cross sectional images of the heart using
x-rays
from multiple angles. An electron beam CT (EBCT
) is used to detectcalcium deposits
(blockages) in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. A multidetector CT (MDCT
) takes multiple rapid scans that can show issues in the heart’s structure and pumping function.Contrast dye
is injected into a vein prior to the test to help highlight theblood vessels
to create a clearer picture. The contrast dye may affect patients with pre existingkidney conditions
; acardiac MRI
may be performed instead. Aradiologist
conducts CT scans with findings sent to the patient’scardiologist
. The images of the heart are used to diagnose heart disease, defects or injuries to the heart valves, blood clots
,tumours
andpericarditis
