Neuro-Ophthalmology

Neuro-Ophthalmology is a sub specialty of both

neurology

and

ophthalmology

concerned with eye symptoms caused by the nervous system. Neuro-ophthalmologists have specific training in the issues of the eye, brain, muscle and nerves. Symptoms assessed and treated by neuro-ophthalmologists are

optic nerve problems

,

vision loss

due to

brain injuries

, unexplained vision loss, disorders of the lids and pupils,

double vision

or a nerve transmission issue called

myasthenia gravis

. Patients are referred to neuro-ophthalmologists if they are suspected to have

high intracranial pressure

or vision issues relating to

brain tumours

. During assessment the patient’s history is taken before evaluation of the patients eyes and vision will be conducted through various testing such as

vision field testing

,

colour vision

and

visual acuity

. Any diagnosis will be discussed and a treatment plan made with the neuro-ophthalmologist.
