Neurotology (or neuro-otology) is a subspecialty of otolaryngology (ENT – ear, nose & throat) concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of neurological (nervous system) disorders of the ear. The nervous system involves the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Conditions treated by neurotologists may include: vestibular (balance) diseases caused by problems in the inner ear or brain; vestibular neuronitis, involving an inflammation of the vestibular nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain; vertigo, a type of dizziness due to a dysfunction of the vestibular system in the inner ear; tumours; injuries to the face; and paralysis or other conditions relating to the facial nerve.
