About Auckland Dermatology

Auckland Dermatology is the largest dermatology practice in New Zealand. We pride ourselves on providing quality care to all our patients. This includes children, adolescents or adults with general medical, cosmetic or surgical problems.

Our aim is to provide a service that is empathetic to the patient in a clinical situation, where we listen to the patients concerns and try to provide appropriate evidence based care, the patient determining their treatment rather than being physician directed.

We have a wide range of practitioners. We provide the only fully trained paediatric dermatologists (Nick Birchall and Diana Purvis) in the country, a highly skilled Mohs micrographic surgeon (Paul Salmon) and general dermatologists (Sonya Havill, Nick Turnbull). We also provide a range of cosmetic and laser treatments. Cosmetic services are headed by Amanda Child. Laser treatments are directed by Susan Smith, offering treatments with the Enlighten laser, the most advanced pico/nano second laser for the management of tattoos and pigmented lesions, Excel V and V beam tuneable dye laser for management of vascular lesions in conjunction with our leading expertise in the treatment of hair removal with the Alexandrite laser which still remains the gold standard laser for this purpose.

We are affiliated providers for Southern Cross, but also fully approved treatment providers for all other health care insurance providers.

Outlined below is a short synopsis of the bibliographies of the consultants in our practice.

He has achieved accreditation in dermatopathology with the International Society of Dermatopathology and European Union of Medical Specialists. During his overseas training he has presented at regional, national and international meetings and has been published in international journals. Dr Paul Salmon

Two years of his specialist training were at the University of California, San Francisco working with some of Americas top cosmetic surgeons. Dr Salmon founded the Skin Centre in 1997. He is an International fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and is in demand to speak internationally at Dermatology meetings. In 2009 Dr Salmon arranged and chaired the core symposium of Cutaneous and Surgical Dermatology at the World Congress of Dermatology in Prague, a great honour and a first for a New Zealand dermatologist.

He is one of the few New Zealand Dermatologists trained to perform advanced facial reconstructions for difficult Mohs procedures for multiply recurrent tumours of the face and is registered to perform category I invasive cosmetic surgical procedures such as blepharoplasty, facelifts and fat grafting.

Pauls Practice has always been driven by the twin goals practicing his specialty at the highest level on the one hand and care and attention to his patients as individuals on the other. Pauls firm belief that no patient should be disfigured by skin cancer surgery is the philosophy that drives his pursuit of excellence in the performance of Mohs Surgery and Reconstruction.

Paul works in collaboration with five other Dermatologists in the Tauranga Practice and four other Dermatologists in the Auckland Practice. His association with The Skin Centre and Auckland Dermatology helps to provide care for patients from Whangarei through Tauranga, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Nelson.

Through his pursuit to the dedication of Academic Excellence Paul is the Director of a Post-Doctoral Training Program in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Cosmetic Surgery (only one of five American College of Mohs Surgery Training posts outside the USA) preparing and training other Dermatologists committed to providing the highest standard of Facial Skin Cancer surgery and care to their patients.

He has been an invited guest speaker on many occasions at the American Academy of Dermatology Meetings, The World Congress of Dermatology, Australian College of Dermatology and New Zealand Dermatology Society Annual Meetings over the last 20 years. He has been Chair or Co-Chair of sessions at the World Congress of Dermatology in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015. In 2009 he was asked to oversee the entire Cutaneous Oncology program for the World Congress meeting in Prague. Dr Salmon is the past Chair of the Dermatology Training committee of the Royal Australian College of Physicians.

He continues to be New Zealands most prominent Mohs Surgeon both internationally and nationally.
