Mr Daniel Mafi

Daniel is a general, bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgeon. Based out of Tauranga, Daniel has gained a wealth of experience over the past 15 years, working in all of New Zealands major centres, covering the full breadth of surgical specialties. He also spent two years of subspecialty training at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary (Scotland) where he held the International Medical Training Fellowship in Oesophago-gastric Surgery focusing on the management of Oesophageal and gastric cancer.

Having worked at the busiest cancer center in Scotland with internationally recognised experts, Daniel has returned to New Zealand with a comprehensive set-of-skills and truly contemporary expertise in managing upper gastrointestinal disorders. Additional experience was gained during this time in complex hernia surgery (including abdominal wall reconstruction) and bariatric (weight loss) surgery.

While in Scotland (and made particularly relevant by the Covid-19 outbreak) Daniel set up a dedicated Inguinal Hernia under Local Anaesthetic service. This is a safe and effective way of repairing inguinal hernias while avoiding the risk of a General Anaesthetic - risks that may be increased secondary to comorbidities and/or acquiring Covid post-operatively. Additionally, performing this surgery under LA drastically reduces the price by excluding Anaesthetist and Hospital expenses - and may enable timely repair for those patients who might otherwise have been unable to afford it. He will be performing these operations at the consulting rooms.
