Dr Diederik Meylemans

Dr Diederik Meylemans is a General and Acute Surgeon with a particular clinical focus on hernia (abdominal wall) pathology, as well as acute surgical conditions and benign & malignant diseases of the small bowel, colon and skin.
He graduated Magna Cum Laude in Medicine from KU Leuven in 2009 and completed his surgical training in Belgium.

Following his specialist training, he undertook a 12-month postgraduate fellowship in complex abdominal wall repair and coloproctology at Imelda Hospital, Bonheiden, before spending almost two years as a Senior Clinical Fellow in the Colorectal Department at Oxford University Hospitals, focusing on surgical management of IBD, functional, benign and malignant conditions of the small bowel, colon and rectum.

Since joining Auckland City Hospital in 2018, Dr Meylemans has worked across general, colorectal and acute surgery. He now focuses much of his practice on (abdominal wall) hernia surgery and the management of acute surgical patients.

His clinical practice is supported by an active interest in surgical outcomes and evidence-based care. He is involved in research into the outcomes and optimal management of inguinal hernia surgery, with multiple peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings.
