About Mercy Hospital Dunedin Ltd
We offer a caring and supportive environment served by professional, highly skilled and dedicated staff. Your stay will be in tranquil parkland surroundings. Our philosophy is to maintain Christian values where the dignity of every person is respected. We value our relationship and friendship with Ngai Tahu through the Otakau Runaka.
Mercy Hospital Dunedin Ltd is a private not-for-profit organisation with charitable status and Accredited by DAA Group.
Mercy Hospital has a strong commitment to providing assistance and support for the greater community. This is seen through our charitable outreach and mission services.
The hospital was established in 1936 and relocated to the current Maori Hill site in 1969. Our main focus is private elective surgery with six theatres, a two bed ICU facility, forty-nine inpatient beds, twenty-four day surgery beds, six day surgery chairs along with a fully equipped Cardiac Catheterisation Lab.
Along with the health services provided at Mercy Hospital, the Sisters of Mercy organisation has a strong commitment to providing assistance and support for the greater community. This is seen through the commitment to both the charitable outreach and mission service.
Mercy Hospital facilitates research primarily through the funding of the McAuley Chair in International Health at the University of Otago. The Centre has a particular focus on tuberculosis with studies in The Gambia and Indonesia, while in Cambodia there is an “intervention against anaemia and micronutrient deficiency through fortification and education study”. Research that is currently being planned in Samoa, in collaboration with their National University, focuses on facilitating local projects.
Central to the care provided at Mercy Hospital is the attention given to the spiritual well-being of patients and staff. While all employees contribute to the spiritual care provided at Mercy Hospital it is the particular focus of the Pastoral Care Team.
We have two joint ventures with Specialists. Mercy Heart Centre and the Mercy Cancer Care Unit.
The Mercy Heart Centre was opened in July 2004 to provide the people of the lower South Island with specialist cardiology services. This state of the art facility, in combination with private cardiac surgery, provides the breadth of cardiac and vascular care through Mercy Hospital.
The Mercy Cancer Care Unit opened in May 2011 to provide the people of the lower South Island with specialist Oncology services. Effective cancer management demands a multi-disciplinary approach and the specialist cancer care team is at the heart of the hospital. Our oncologists coordinate the program of care and treatment and this relationship between patient and oncologist is central to the successful outcome for our patients.
