Iron Infusions

Iron infusions are for people with

iron deficiency

who cannot take iron supplements for various reasons.

Intravenous iron

is the preferred form of supplementation for people with other chronic conditions such as

kidney disease or

inflammatory bowel disease

. Infusions are a rapid way to remedy depleted iron stores through an intravenous drip.

General practitioners

can administer the infusion. There are three types of IV Iron,

iron polymaltose

(Preferred option) which can be administered all at once or in smaller intervals,

iron sucrose

administered in small doses over a number of days or weeks and

iron carboxymaltose

given as a medium dose once or twice.
