Reproductive Endocrinology

Reproductive endocrinologists are specialists in hormones disorders directly affecting the reproductive system. They are generally experts in fertility and specialised in

obstetrics and gynaecology

before training further in reproductive endocrinology. Reproductive endocrinologists diagnose and treat disorders affecting fertility such as

endometriosis

,

polycystic ovarian syndrome

(PCOS), male and female

infertility

,

hypothalamic amenorrhea

(lack of menstrual period) and

hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction

. Reproductive endocrinologists work with the patient to achieve pregnancy. A common surgery performed is a

laparoscopy

to view and diagnose conditions or surgically remove scar tissue or repair damaged fallopian tubes. A

hysteroscopy

inspects the uterus via a small camera placed through the cervix. Abnormalities such as

fibroids

or

polyps

can be removed during surgery. Reproductive endocrinologists use techniques for

conception

including

in vitro fertilisation

and

artificial insemination

.
