Dr Morgan Pokorny

Morgan Pokorny is a New Zealand trained urologist who completed his fellowship training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, conducting a combined clinical Fellowship and research PhD in prostate cancer between 2009-2012. During this time he developed broad skills in laparoscopic surgery, general urology and renal stone surgery. His PhD thesis was carried out in the field of molecular biology of prostate cancer, focussing on Y-box binding protein 1. From 2011 Morgan began working with Dr Les Thompson at the Wesley Hospital, and this collaboration led to the first Australian trial, led by Dr Thompson and Dr Pokorny, comparing 3T prostate MRI diagnostics and image-guided prostate biopsy to traditional TRUS biopsy. This trial revolutionized the workup and diagnosis of prostate cancer in Brisbane, and very soon across Australia and New Zealand.

In 2014 Morgan travelled to Belgium to spend a year in a sought-after Robotic Urological Fellowship programme under Prof Alex Mottrie, chair of the European Robotic Urology Section. This busy high volume unit allowed Morgan to gain accredited training and expertise in robotic prostatectomy and robotic renal surgery, including partial nephrectomy, pyeloplasty and other pelvic urologic procedures.

Morgan has published a number of papers on prostate MRI diagnostics and robotic surgery and has been a regular invited speaker at state and national meetings in Australia and New Zealand over the last 3 years. He is a reviewer for European Urology, Journal of Urology and Urology. He is a lead co-investigator on a multi-centre international trial investigating the use of iron nano-particle MRI scans to identify prostate cancer spread to lymph nodes. Morgan has returned to Auckland and is pleased to offer his services to patients in the greater Auckland region and surrounds. Morgan has performed over 300 robotic procedures and offers expert care in prostate cancer, renal cancer, bladder cancer and general urology conditions including stone disease.
