Cardiac CT in Dunedin
x-rays
from multiple angles. An electron beam CT (
EBCT
) is used to detect
calcium deposits
(blockages) in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. A multidetector CT (
MDCT
) takes multiple rapid scans that can show issues in the heart’s structure and pumping function.
Contrast dye
is injected into a vein prior to the test to help highlight the
blood vessels
to create a clearer picture. The contrast dye may affect patients with pre existing
kidney conditions
; a
cardiac MRI
may be performed instead. A
radiologist
conducts CT scans with findings sent to the patient’s
cardiologist
. The images of the heart are used to diagnose heart disease, defects or injuries to the heart valves,
blood clots
,
tumours
and
pericarditis
.
